I was very young when I learned I had MS and I must confess, it was a very difficult time for me. I alienated myself from everybody. I even prohibited my immediate family from talking about it with friends and other family members. I didn’t speak to anyone, I was just trying to understand how my life was going to change with the diagnosis. I even moved to another country. It was a dark time for me because so much was unknown.
Once I began treatment with infusions and had more appointments, I started asking questions. My neurologist was very nice and explained the process. Even more importantly, I met other patients and I understood that I was not alone. I began asking questions and sharing information until it felt familiar and I could relax. I joined MS groups and continued my journey.
Now, I feel comfortable in answering questions and sharing details of my MS. When I meet a younger person who has MS, I can relate and share how I felt in the beginning when we talk. People are afraid of speaking, of asking, of knowing. But with MS, you need to be prepared and knowing what to expect is powerful.
