It’s important to me to look good—I find in general, it’s important for my self-esteem. While I’ve always had a strong sense of self-esteem, I can honestly say that suffering from MS has had an impact on that.
MS can kick you to the ground—sometimes literally, but also metaphorically. You have to lift yourself up, and try to forget, or at least think less about all of your MS worries. MS can make you feel worried or weak. Unfortunately, these are things some of us have to deal with daily. On the worst days, I believe looking good can greatly help.
When I feel tense or sad, closing myself up will make everything worse. On those days, I tend to dress and fix myself up as much as I can. That first look in the mirror can make me remember the beautiful woman I am. Compliments from friends help me forget my worries.
For me, getting my hair styled and my nails polished is an absolute therapy. When I’m worried about my MS, having an hour with wonderful people (in my case, moments with very good friends) who make me look my very best is a relief. They're moments of sharing secrets, laughs and maybe, a little gossip ;)
Choosing the color for my nails is always an adventure. I tend to change my mind a lot (I mean it, a lot). Making a decision is often affected by how happy or worried I am. My nail technician knows me well. We laugh and laugh as she tries to convince me to make up my mind.
I also enjoy shopping. Going to the store (not shopping online) is essential to me. I need to see how something looks on, how I look moving around in the dressing rooms. I plan carefully for a shopping day. I make sure to wear comfortable shoes and I focus on specific stores. I try to be clear on what I’m looking for, as just browsing for fun can make me very tired.
While I love trying on clothes, some days it can be difficult. So, when that happens, I just try on shoes instead :D
